Acne Treatments at California Dermatology Specialists
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. Acne is commonly thought of as a teenage problem; however, this skin condition can trouble people in any stage of life. Even mild cases of acne can cause you to feel self-conscious and embarrassed about your appearance, while serious cases can leave permanent scarring, causing long-term aesthetic concerns. No one, unfortunately, is immune from acne: it affects both women and men, with 30% of women and 20% of men dealing with acne at some point during their lives.
Acne starts when dead skin and oil clog your pores. If germs get into the pores, the clogged pores can become red, swollen, and pus-filled bumps. When these pimples become large and deep, they are called cysts or cystic lesions and they can become very sore if infected. This cystic form of acne can lead to long-term scarring. At California Dermatology Specialists, with offices in Brentwood, Los Angeles and Calabasas, California, we offer a range of powerful acne treatments that target and fight acne at its source in order to keep your skin clear and beautiful.
Mild to Moderate Acne
Our recommended course of treatment will depend on the severity of your acne. Sometimes a combination of treatments is necessary to avoid developing drug resistant bacteria. Mild to moderate acne can often be treated with:
- Topical medication
- Topical and oral antibiotics
Moderate to Severe Acne
For patients suffering from more severe acne, or for those patients who may not tolerate topical and/or medications, we offer a range of advanced, comprehensive treatments designed to combat acne at the source, deep within the skin.
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), also called blue light therapy or BLU-U, is a unique light that targets and kills the bacteria deep within your skin that is causing the irritation and inflammation at the root of acne breakouts. It is a simple, in-office treatment that involves sitting with your face close to the light for a short time, approximately 15-17 minutes once or twice each week. The treatment is completely comfortable and even relaxing! Optimal results will require multiple treatments over several weeks.
Salicylic Acid Peels
Salicylic acid peels are best used on those patients with acne-prone skin. These treatments can help improve clogged pores, oily, congested skin, acne breakouts, and blackheads by gently and safely removing the outer layers of skin. By removing damaged skin, the body is stimulated to remodel collagen strands and create new collagen fibers to repair the damaged skin. The result is a clearer, healthier, acne-free complexion.
Acne Scarring or Skin Discoloration
If you have suffered from acne in the past and are are concerned about the appearance of visible scarring, we can offer a variety of options from dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, IPL, and laser skin resurfacing to make scarring less noticeable. In some cases, dermal fillers can work well to reduce some types of acne scars.
